A major early-morning fire swept through downtown Walhalla, South Carolina, on Thursday, September 17, 2026, heavily damaging multiple buildings and forcing road closures as firefighters from numerous agencies worked to contain the blaze. Fire Breaks Out in Downtown Walhalla

Crews from around 10 fire departments, including Clemson University Fire Department, responded to assist with suppression efforts as firefighters battled the multi-building blaze for several hours.

Seven Storefronts Impacted

Officials said the fire heavily damaged seven storefronts, including several long-established downtown businesses. Some reports indicate that a number of the affected buildings were more than 100 years old, making the loss especially significant for the historic downtown district.

Among the businesses reported as destroyed or heavily damaged were restaurants, a coffee shop, an antique store, and other locally owned establishments.

Authorities closed Highway 28 (East Main Street) between North and South Catherine Streets and North and South Tugaloo Streets while emergency crews worked at the scene.
