Nick Reiner Murder Case Update: Son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner Faces First-Degree Murder Charges

The criminal case involving Nick Reiner, the son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, continues to move through the Los Angeles court system following the couple’s fatal stabbing deaths in December 2025.

Nick Reiner, 33, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents at their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home. Prosecutors have also alleged special circumstances, including lying in wait, along with allegations related to the use of a knife. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody awaiting trial.

Prosecutors Remove Death Penalty From Consideration

In a significant development, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that it will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner if he is convicted.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the decision followed consultations with the victims’ surviving children, Jake and Romy Reiner, as well as consideration of other mitigating factors. If convicted, Nick Reiner now faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The Case

Rob Reiner, an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker known for directing classics such as Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, and A Few Good Men, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found fatally stabbed inside their Brentwood residence on December 14, 2025.

Authorities arrested Nick Reiner later that day. Investigators allege the killings followed escalating family tensions, though the criminal proceedings remain ongoing and the allegations have not been proven in court.

Court Proceedings Continue

Nick Reiner has twice entered not guilty pleas and continues to contest the charges. The case has progressed through grand jury proceedings, with prosecutors alleging that the killings were premeditated and carried out while the victims were vulnerable. Defense attorneys have indicated they intend to challenge the prosecution’s evidence as the case moves toward trial.

Because prosecutors are no longer pursuing capital punishment, the primary sentencing exposure upon conviction is now life imprisonment without parole rather than execution. The trial is not expected to begin until a later date as pretrial litigation continues.

Nick Reiner has not been convicted of the charges. Under the U.S. legal system, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The allegations against him remain subject to ongoing judicial proceedings.
